As I sit down to reflect on the journey that has led me to volunteer with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS), I am filled with a mix of emotions: excitement, anticipation, and a deep sense of purpose. Having completed just under nine hours of training, I am preparing to step into a role that is both challenging and profoundly meaningful. This blog post will share my experience so far, the training I’ve undergone, and my thoughts on what lies ahead as I await my first session with families who are navigating the heartbreaking loss of a baby.

My introduction to NILMDTS came through a combination of personal interest in photography, a desire to make a meaningful difference in my community, and a few people referring me to them. I learned that NILMDTS is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing professional photography services to families who have experienced the loss of a baby. Their mission is not just about capturing images but about honoring the lives of these children and providing families with beautiful memories that they can cherish forever.

The realization that I could combine my passion for photography with a cause that supports families in their darkest moments was compelling. It sparked something deep within me, prompting me to take the leap into volunteering.

Completing nearly nine hours of training has been an enlightening and emotional experience. The training is designed to prepare volunteers for the sensitive nature of the work, equipping us with the necessary skills to approach families with compassion and respect. Here are some key elements of my training journey so far:

1. Understanding Grief: One of the most impactful aspects of the training has been learning about the grieving process. Understanding how grief manifests differently in each individual has been crucial. This knowledge will allow me to approach families with empathy and sensitivity, recognizing that each person's experience is unique. The program even has a pamphlet with different cultures and religions grieving processes and beliefs.

2. Photography Techniques: The technical aspects of photography have also been a significant focus of my training. I’ve learned about the importance of lighting, composition, and how to capture the essence of a moment without intruding on the family’s space. It’s about creating a serene environment where families feel comfortable, allowing me to document their precious memories respectfully.

3. Communication Skills: Effective communication is vital in this line of work. My training emphasized the importance of listening and responding appropriately to families' needs. Knowing when to speak and when to remain silent can make all the difference in creating a supportive atmosphere.

4. Post-Processing Skills: I’ve also begun to explore the post-processing side of photography. Learning how to edit images with care ensures that the final photographs reflect the beauty and love inherent in each moment captured. This attention to detail is essential in providing families with images they will cherish for a lifetime.

5. Self-Care and Emotional Support: Perhaps one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the necessity of self-care. Engaging with families during such a vulnerable time can take an emotional toll. The training has provided strategies for managing my feelings and ensuring that I have the support I need to continue doing this important work. The program even offers a non-denominational chaplain.

As I await my first assignment, I find myself reflecting on what this experience will bring. It’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about stepping into such an emotionally charged situation. Here are some thoughts I have as I prepare for this next step:

-I remind myself that this work is about honoring the lives of children and providing families with a tangible memory of their little ones. The significance of this role weighs heavily on my heart, and I am committed to approaching it with the utmost respect and care.

-I often take a moment to visualize what my first session will be like. I imagine arriving at the hospital, meeting the family, and capturing moments that reflect their love. This visualization helps me to mentally prepare and understand the emotional landscape I will be stepping into.

-I have found solace in connecting with other volunteers. Hearing their stories and experiences has been inspiring and reassuring. They have shared their journeys, offering insights into what to expect and how to navigate the emotional challenges that may arise.

-I understand that this experience will require me to be open and vulnerable. It’s okay to feel a range of emotions—sadness, joy, and everything in between. Embracing these feelings will allow me to connect with families on a deeper level.

The impact of volunteering with NILMDTS extends far beyond photography. It’s about providing families with the gift of remembrance during an incredibly challenging time. The images I capture will serve as a testament to the love that exists, even in the face of loss. Knowing that I will be part of creating something so meaningful fills me with hope and purpose.

As I embark on this journey with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve families during their most vulnerable moments. The training I have completed has prepared me for the emotional challenges ahead, and I am eager to put my skills into practice. While I have yet to go on my first session, I am ready to embrace this experience with an open heart, knowing that I am contributing to a legacy of love and remembrance.

In sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others to consider how they, too, can make a difference in the lives of families facing loss. Together, we can help create lasting memories that honor the lives of the little ones we photograph.
